The Firm · FAQ
Common questions.
The things prospective clients ask us first, answered directly. If what you need is not here, ask us on a call.
Q.01
Do you work with clients outside Toronto?
Yes. The firm is based in Toronto, at 1050 King Street West, and that is where the team, the crew and the equipment are.
Software, strategy and publicity engagements run remotely without changing how we work, and we already have clients outside the city. Production is the part that depends on geography: shoots in Toronto and the GTA we can staff quickly, and for work further out we travel and scope the travel into the quote.
Distribution reaches further than production does. Our own newsroom and network place work across Canada and into the United States.
Q.02
Can you handle both the technology and the media on one project?
Yes, and it is how a lot of our work runs. The two practices have their own specialist teams, so a project that needs an application and a launch film is not one generalist team stretched across two disciplines.
Software
The Dispatch and Mr. Indecisive are live on the App Store. GEB, Wildin, TNAADO Connect, Find The Title, Mr Syn and Dispatch Live are built and releasing, and Citadel, a Mac application, is in in-house testing. The firm also runs what it built for itself: tools.tnaado.ca and its 175 free calculators, the tnaado.ca newsroom, the site.tnaado.ca newsroom CMS, and eighteen more internal systems it runs its own operations on.
Media
A working newsroom, our own crew and our own equipment, scaled up through rental partners when a production calls for more.
Both practices are staffed in house. Neither is subcontracted out to somebody else.
Q.03
What if we already have an agency or an in-house team?
That is the usual situation, and it does not need resolving before you talk to us. We are regularly brought in beside a team that already exists, to cover a defined gap: a production the in-house team cannot staff, a build nobody has bandwidth for, a launch that needs a newsroom behind it.
The work is scoped to that piece, run to your team's brief, and handed back with the footage and the source code. We are not asking you to replace anyone.
Q.04
Who owns the work and the footage?
On a paid engagement, you keep the intellectual property — the finished work, the raw footage and the source code.
TNAADO normally keeps the right to show that work in its own portfolio, case studies and showreel, and the client work named on this site is that right being used. It is the standard arrangement rather than a fixed one, and it is written into the engagement terms for each project, so if you need the work kept private or the footage held back, say so before we start and the terms are set that way.
Q.05
Can we pay to be featured in the newsroom?
No. The newsroom does not sell coverage. Editorial is kept separate from anything paid for, and paid content is labelled as paid content.
Publicity work is a different thing from buying an article. What we do is find a genuine newsworthy angle for a business and place that; where there is no angle, we say so rather than run it anyway. A placement is only worth having if readers trust the publication it appeared in, which is why the separation is enforced rather than informal.
Q.06
What does an engagement cost?
Media work is quoted per engagement, with fixed packages available. Technology work starts from a retainer.
Every project is quoted before any work begins. The full detail — the packages, the retainers and what each one includes — is on the pricing page.
Q.07
How quickly can you start?
Usually the same week. The crew and the engineering team are in house, so there is no subcontractor's calendar sitting between you and a start date.
Tell us your deadline on the first call and we will tell you then whether we can hit it, instead of after a week of scoping.
Q.08
Who will actually be working on our project?
Named people from our own bench, and you meet them. Nothing is outsourced: the journalists, developers, producers, crew and strategists are all TNAADO, working from Toronto.
The current bench is listed in full on the team page.
